Alright so i was changing the strings on my intrepid 828 and the string hole for the 8th string was too small for the .74 gauge. So i decided to unwind the string some so it would fit. So heres my problem there is a buzz all over the fretboard only on the 8th string and it isnt buzzing on the frets i have already raised the action and that did nothing. Also the string sounds very mudding and over all horrible. It sounded great before though i some how got the .74 gauge through the string hole without unwinding the string. So do i need to adjust the truss rod or do i need to make the string hole bigger and not unwind the string? thanks in advance

Do you mean you unwrapped some of the string an only put the core through the hole? Do you have tuning issues when tuning this string? I would route out the hole to accommodate the string size. You can check the relief of the neck by using a metal straight edge such as a steel meter stick from home depot cut down to the length of your neck. Hope this helps.

I'm with Dirtdog, the best solution will be to route out the hole.
I guess i'll have to do that to mine as well as i'm thinking in putting a 74 .

Dude, you need new string, coz when you was unwinding it you damaged winding and it's not holding a core. And yeah it's better to drill hole in a tuner, but give it to specialist :)

I don't know about drilling the hole, but unwinding the end of the string never caused a problem for me. I've found that 27 - 28.65 inch 8-strings just need some special treatment when being adjusted. I've had some trouble with getting the relief just right with my 828 pro.

If you enlarge the hole, be sure to polish the id. Use a jewelers file to enlarge it slightly. A little filing should go a long way.
