So, Pin has agreed to do an interview with me for my creative process class in University. My interview will solely consist of talk about the writing process and creativity, but other people have expressed interest in an interview and Pin has said he'd be more than happy to answer a few questions. So anyone with any questions about gear, or pretty much any questions I haven't though of, post them up in here!

I will be sending Pin my interview questions today because my assignment is due in 6 days, but we can send him the rest of our questions when we've accumulated a good number of them, and post the whole interview when it's all done :yesway:

Here's what I've got so far:

1.How would you define creativity?

2.What, would you say, is a creative person?

3.When it comes to writing music, what are your main inspirations?

4.How has your writing process evolved over the years? Did it change when you started playing with other musicians?

5.How does the technical/theoretical side of things interact with your creative output?

6.Being a guitar teacher and a successful musician, does playing the guitar ever start feeling like a chore or a job? How does that effect your playing?

7.When a band reaches a certain level of success, people come to expect more and I understand that can be intimidating, and possibly even hindering to some artists. How has this sort of thing effected your creative output?

8.The music you played in Sikth is anything but conventional. Has it at any point, especially at the beginning, been difficult to find an audience for what you were doing? If so, was it discouraging, and did it effect your playing/creativity?

9.Now that Sikth is done, I understand that you have been working on some new projects, Within the Void and Aliases. Considering that Within the Void is a band with members all over the globe and Aliases started out as “the fun band”, how would you compare the writing/creative processes of these two projects? How do they compare to the writing/creative process in Sikth?

10.I've read that you've been experimenting with different tunings for these new projects after using some pretty basic tunings in Sikth. How has that changed your approach to writing?

I'd like to know his opinion on learning from a tutor, and whether being trained can affect your own style etc.

Is your digitech whammy the reason you have no hair? Perhaps the octave up shred has melted it away?

Does being bald (with it's aerodynamic & ergonomic design) give you an unfair advantage in teh realm of face melting shredz?

Ha. jokes. :p

Ok, serious questions, um...

1. Who are your biggest inspirations musically?

2. Who is your favorite artist that you think people who don't know you personally wouldn't expect you to listen to?

3. When you write music, would you consider yourself more influenced by knowledge of theory or by feel & emotion?

when you write more chaotic and seemingly random phrases/parts, do you have a specific approach as to how it should go, or do you just stay within the scale?

referring to the weird tapping parts here and there. not the fast ones, but the slow ones that are often clean as well. the notes are so seemingly random, and so far apart from eachother, that it sounds like a sad robot or something. yet none of the notes sound off, and it's all in the right scale.

what i'm wondering is if he's already composed each note in his head before playing it, or if he just knows that it should be in a certain scale and he just jams it out until he has his pattern.

not good with wording my questions here

What made you decide to use 6 strings in the "octave jump" tuning (Ab Ab Db Gb Bb Eb) instead of using 7 strings tuned to Ab Db Ab Db Gb Bb Eb?

...and that's all i could think of, but it's something i've always been curious about since SikTh was the first band I've heard that was doing that.

edit: Could you also please tab every single SikTh song? Please?

I won't sticky this because a) you're doing it as part of a class and b) he doesn't play seven-string guitars and as such isn't really ss.org's deal, but I fully endorse this interview:yesway:

EX-MEMBERS OF SIKTH ARE INHERENTLY SS.ORG'S DEAL, REGARDLESS OF GUITAR.

In all seriousness, I agree with "a" though. Perhaps a mod run interview is in order at some point? Get some new front page content.

Agreed!
Though he does play seven strings, not in previous music but 2 are owned and may be incorporated in future tunes

ask him even though he has badass amps if he uses modelers at all for any pre production/recording/whatever reason, and if yes, what modelers does he use.

Right Browne - when ya use more than 2 of your 'seven' strings i will allow you to have an opinion. :nono:

Lol just kidding fella (kinda) - hows the new stuff coming along?:shred:

I am pretty exited to read this. I watch the video on youtube of Dan and Pin playing Live at the ICMP at least a few times a week. The skill is tremendous as well as the song writing, and overall musicality of Sikth just blew my mind.
I can't think of a better question to ask persay than most of the ones already posted, I'm just interested his approach to writing songs/sections and became an individual guitarist.
