I think the only ones that really stuck with me this year were:
Hellripper - Warlocks Grim and Withered Hags
The Arcane Order - Distortions From Cosmonogy

My Spotify Wrapped said Periphery was my top artist and all 5 top songs were from PV, so I guess that's my AOTY

Off the top of my head, I would say my top 5 albums this year were:

Periphery - Periphery V
Currents - The Death We Seek
Johnny Booth - Moments Elsewhere
Holding Absence - The Noble Art of Self Destruction
Orbit Culture - Descent

Late addition but I'm digging the singles (double sided single vinyl? I don't fucking know, it's shorter than an EP...) from Deep Red: How This Ends / Soft Light

Also checked out new Panopticon because of this thread and it also rules. Gimme those loon calls, baby.

Guess I'm gonna keep spamming this thread with more late entries because I forgot there was also new Phoxjaw so I just listened to that at work. Rock solid on their end, overall better for me than their last one, Royal Swan (also a great album title).

Phoxjaw - notverynicecream

Suffocation - Hymns of the Apocrypha
Dying Fetus - Make Them Beg For Death
Cannibal Corpse - Chaos Horrific
Tyler Childers - All My Homies Hate Ticketmaster

This was an interesting selection for me because:

1. I have had stylistic pet peeves with lots of DF’s catalog (sweeps always felt a little contextually out of place, honestly. Weird gripe. Amazing band.) and Make Them Beg For Death is the first album by them that I’ve spun multiple times.

2. I don’t generally like live albums, or live country music in general, but All My Homies Hate Ticketmaster just works, for me.

No real notes on new Suffocation other than it feels like a return to form and an improvement in production vs the last two records. Fucking sick.

New CC? Always a good thing.

Zach Bryan, not Tyler Childers. Brain fart.

Silly me, I forgot Spiritbox put out a new EP, but I haven't spun it much but it still takes the #3 spot by that alone

I was so ready to put Humanity's Last Breath - Ashen as my album of the year, but then Earthside came out of nowhere and blew my mind once again with some incredible songwriting

As of right now I can't choose a favorite of the two...

My honorable mentions:
Periphery - V: Djent Is Not A Genre
TesseracT - The War Of Being
Spiritbox - The Fear Of Fear EP

I also have the new Gunship kicking around on a limited picture vinyl, but I've been in too deep with Humanity's Last Breath and Earthside, so I have yet to give it a listen.

Pretty sure it's the last one for me that I forgot about, but Palms had a nice return after their first release 10 years ago: another short 2 song EP, Opening Titles/Ending Credits

Also, I checked out The Ocean's Holocene but it feels like their weakest release overall to me. Some cool sections on the album but the whole thing feels like it's trying to be weird and experimental for them, unfortunately it just kinda comes off as boring and uninteresting. Pelagial was probably peak The Ocean for me and it was a steady decline with each release after, but what are ya gonna do?

I'll call it for myself, mostly because I'm tired of thinking about it:

1. Humanity's Last Breath - Ashen
2. Svalbard - The Weight of the Mask
3. Thy Art is Murder - Godlike
4. To the Grave - Offcuts
5. Cattle Decapitation - Terrasite
6. Entheos - Time Will Take Us All
7. END - The Sin of Human Frailty

Katsushika Trio - M.R.I Mirai

My favourite album of the year completely snuck up on me. The 3 former members of the classic Casiopea lineup decided they wanted to make music together again. And while Issei Noro's absence is felt, these guys can still set their instruments on fire.
