I got my septum stretched today...two sizes. I went from a 10 to a 6g. I'm considering getting my eyebrow double pierced as well. I thought about it a while as the initial thought of getting such things done at this stage in life (I'm 38) was regressive. This got me to thinking. Why, as a society, have we decided that certain things done for oneself can't be done at a certain age? We expect kids to get tattoos, piercings, dress in non traditional ways but as adults we're expected to shed all of that..I'd argue that as you get older, THAT'S when you should do all those things. You're an adult of sound mind (in theory), you work, you pay bills, you contribute to society..you have earned the right to look however you want. It's your body and you have every right to like what you see when you look in the mirror. You've more than earned the right to express yourself how you please as you've managed all the responsibilities of someone your age.
People deserve to be happy with themselves. Your happiness is not under condition of the approval from others. On your death bed you should be able to look back on your life, reflect, and be happy that you did the things you wanted to do and pursued happiness on your own terms. It's a miserable life playing by the rules of people who don't know you and don't care.
