You do know that your prized graphs, calculus, and stats have little use for most people in real world applications, right? For an engineer designing something like a simple beam, you literally just plug a few values into whatever software suite or spreadsheet you are using and it tells you exactly what you need. For that beam connection to another beam, all I do is plug in the shear load and axial tension/compression values and.. poof....connection designed with 15 pages of longhand automated calculations.
This isn't the argument you think it is

of course it is. You said I'm terrible at my job because I somehow, in your opinion don't understand math.

My point was, a lot of that math you covet is antiquated in real world application. No one does calc anymore.

Right winter? As opposed to left winter? Ok...

I'm the asshole? Look at the general behavior of members in this thread towards those that AREN'T on the extreme left. You guys really aren't the pure and innocent folks you like to think you are. You conduct yourselves exactly like the far right does.

Extreme left?

Two of my fav presidents of the modern age are Poppy Bush and Eisenhower. And while W made a lot of mistakes, he also gave the world one of the great humanitarian programs of all time - PEPFAR. I personally knew John McCain. He was the last true lion of the Senate. I also worked in Romney’s campaign.

Let me scroll through my last 1000 interactions on here. Done. Didn’t see one remotely involving the assholery you bring. As the poet once said… You need to check yourself. Before you wreck yourself.

No, I said you don't understand maths. Then you said you did a bunch of calc classes in college and you have an engineering degree. Then you didn't understand more maths and I pointed it out again. Then you said your maths skills make you a lot of money. Then I said they don't. Then you said you don't need any understanding of maths at your job at all, despite previously saying a few times that if you made calculation errors people would die.

So, we're back to where we were months ago. You pretending to do stuff you don't do.

You don't build schools; you're a desk jockey.
You don't labour in a steel mill; you're a desk jockey.
You're don't do critical calculations to make good buildings; you're a desk jockey typing your little numbers into your little programs that someone else made and paid for.

And I make more money than you do doing so. A lot.

Go home, kid. Come back when you grow up.

Yeah, once again, this isn't making the point you think it is. You're just admitting to not being part of a meritocracy, contrary to your claims.

Like, if you think financial success is the most important thing that says a lot. Maybe go outside, meet some people and base your personality around compassion instead.

I wouldn't go that far but I find it weird that his idea of winning is spending a huge portion of your life doing something that is admittedly plugging some numbers into some software, waking up early to do so, doing so in all sorts of otherwise free time, and getting paid a lot for it (by his standards of what a lot is, who knows).

If I had kids and they went down into some career they didn't find interesting or important just for money, that's failure in my eyes. You've only got one life. Do something you can be passionate about and that makes a difference in the world or your community. I actually think that's one of the bigger general cultural divides between liberal and conservative -- what is your life actually supposed to be for?

The money came many years after I got into this and I'm thankful for it.

I wouldn't do what I do if I didn't love it. I can go to some towns/cities, look around, and see building after building that I had at least a part in it being there. Building stuff certainly makes a difference in the world. Or, as you like to call it, being a desk jockey. But. I'm a desk jockey with solid modeling and cad softwares and all sorts of other fun stuff. So, it's not just plugging numbers. My day is solving problems, figuring out how shit is going to be built, putting the documentation together for it, and then seeing that thing through from beginning to end.

What is your life supposed to be for? Whatever you want. I choose to work extra on my side gig because I have the time and its wise to get ahead as much as possible in this unpredictable world. If I can retire years early because of it, then great. Or, maybe I get GAS and buy a few higher end guitars. But its nice those options are on the table. Your view of free time and how to spend it does change over time and it's different for everyone. I choose to be productive. If I wasn't working today, I'd be doing landscape in the yard.

Failed upwards? I'm very respected in my field. Not one day being unemployed in 26+ years. I've turned down more job opportunities than I can remember. Nice try.

There is a real world and there is an academic world. Sorry that i do not obsess over graphs and calc like I used to.
A lot of my coworkers make a living using the most hardcore, esoteric advanced math they only teach in grad school. They all definitely make more than you. I have watched real statistics design multimillion dollar machines that operate at nanometer precision, and the I’ve watched statistical analysis (which at an academic level involves a HUGE amount of calculus and differential equations, which you would know if you had the degree you claim to) be used to methodically stamp out bugs, titrate recipe optimizations, and more. Just because you’re too stupid to fathom a use case for math more advanced than an amortization table doesn’t mean that a) it doesn’t have a real world use and b) the people using it aren’t making an incredibly comfortable living.

Pipe. Down.

Most of the real world doesn't use that advanced math and that's fact. Just because people in your industry do, doesn't mean it's the norm.

There we go with calling people stupid and here I go with telling you that if you dared do that to my face in the real world, you wouldn't like the result. Don't be a keyboard commando.

As someone that comes from a lineage of people captured rather than fighting to the end, it is hard to imagine that you are the tough guy in your family.

So, you as someone likely in your 50s is gloating about your salary being larger than me, someone in my 20s. But also acknowledging that earlier in careers salaries are lower.

Can you please make an attempt at coherence?

DrewH, as you continue bring up how much money you make at every opportunity without care for relevance, I'm starting to think the lady doth protest too much. I'm going to need receipts. Until I see them, I'm going to assume you're a middle-manager making a barely-livable wage and you come to this forum to pretend otherwise because it assuages some of the disappointment you read in the eyes of everyone around you. Let's see it, coward.

He probably doesn’t even have a meaty penis, either! He’s a phony. A big fat phony!
