Im going on a bit of a road trip to 'bass direct' in Warric just after Christmas, to buy a six string bass. I have never played a six string, but am well adjusted to five string basses.
I generally play anything between dream theater and meshuggah, but I can delve out into anything as far as jamiroquai :).
Anyway, the shop has a few six strings in and I have narrowed it down to any within my budget, so I humbly ask the bass forum to take a look. Is there any to avoid, anything that I might of missed or any that jump out as good deals. I will probably still play all of these, but any advice is good advice.

2# Stuart Spector Design Bass Guitars:: USA :: Euro 6 LX EX, Poplar Burl top, EMG, Tonepump :: For sale, UK, EU

6# Bass Direct -YAMAHA Bass Guitars, TRB1006 J, Natural, six string bass, For sale, UK, EU. - UK Bass specialist

Anything is appreciated and I don't really care what it looks like (that clover is not really metal, but ... fuck the system :fawk:).

Cheers :hbang:

I'm not a bassist, but one of my coworkers is not only a great bassist, but really into nicer instruments; he's had a couple of Fodera's and we talk about gear all the time. Last week he was telling me that he was going to buy an MTD, and the ones I have seen have all been superb, so I don't think you can go wrong with that one.

I'm biased and would vouch for Dingwall (I bought mine from Bass Direct as well and the person who works there whose name I forget is the nicest man ever).

I do love Spector basses though, they sound fat as hell and have that... tone!

Spector is my favorite brand of bass, cannot wait to have my very own.

I've never played a Dingwall, but hear good things about them ALL the time, but Spector I KNOW is solid and will not disappoint.

Wow. I don't think you could go wrong with any of those.

I've played one of the MTD KZ basses and it was very impressive for the price. But it had a very bright, articulate tone to the point where it seemed a little light in the low end. Might work for you, though.

That Clover looks really cool! I haven't seen that model before.

Please report back after you play these beasts!

Thanks to everyone for the kind words. I will be back here when I have the bass to let everyone know what I went with. I will probably do a mini review and a video playthrough of some song on it.

Anywhere but here.
They look nice, but I have never played an MTD or Spector. At that price range I would be more worried about paying for looks (ooh figured woods....) over quality for any of those shown. I note you are going longer scales though, otherwise I would recommend scoping some Music Man.

Most folks on this forum aren't bassists, just something to watch when you ask for req's, There are 4 or 5 of us here though

the Spector will have more bite for your meshuggah than the rest but for an all around bass id say the Mtd i have the 5 string version and man its a beautiful. and think youd be happier with the mtd because of versitillity
another that id recommend would be Dingwall Combustion 5 SII

Okay, here we go!
Today, I went to bass direct with the idea of looking at some six string basses, with a decent budget. I knew that when I got there I would have to take those six choices down to one, however when I got them there I found out that the MTD had been sold :( ... and replaced with a slightly better version of the one that was sold! :).

So I still had six basses to choose from.
first up, the yamaha

This was the cheapest on the list, and when I started playing, I could tell, lots of string rattle. GONE, and GONE with the other color!

five minutes later, I was onto the Marleaux Consat Custom 6

and I can tell you, this thing sits on your knee like a freaking mold, its the most comfortable thing I have ever played, and I played it for a while! This one was definitely still in the running.

Next up was the new MTD

mmmmmm... this was good.

after the MTD, I played the clover.

This bass had everything, everything I tell you! Seriously, if you wanted to do something with the pickups you could do it, and then set it back to default with one flick of a switch.
unfortunately the lower arm was really short to allow access to the higher frets and it kept falling off my knee. GONE

lastly I played that spector

'looking gooood', I thought, then I picked it up. THIS THING WEIGHED A TON!!!! There was no way I could hold this round my neck without dying which was a pity because it played like a gem. GONE

So there we have it, I was down to the MTD and the mar ... marl ... marleoughsck. hang on, im going to have to google this ... marleaux there we go.

randandandandaladadadandaaaaaaaAAAAAN!!!

I chose the marleaux!
It was a tough choice, but the comfort and warm tone won out over the purple and the bite(ie) tone on the MTD.

MORE PICS!
