I personally love a brass nut and run them on all of my guitars. They are a bit more of a pain to cut though. With proper buffing they won't snag strings, but a little fingerboard oil in the slots can really help smooth out the string pull.
I would say 25.5" to 27" fan is the most commonly seen for 7 and 8 string guitars really. I personally think 27" is the shortest an 8 string should be made, anything less and the low end string tension just doesn't feel good to play. As for 6 strings, I have never played a fanned 6.
I really dig their guitars, but I agree they could have left out the small build/hand built bashing. Reminds me of the Budweiser commercial bashing all the craft beer brewers, just poor taste as a company message.
Ive been using the same clamps from HF that I bought around 6 years ago without issue. Doesn't seem to be any difference in the HF clamps and some of the nicer clamps I've bought from Woodcraft really. I usually just stick with basic hand tools when it comes to HF.
I always use 18" truss rods and mine are always a couple inches away from the bolt area, so you may want to double check your measurements. Looking like good clean work though man.
It seems to me that if you can manage to keep the build time at 45 hrs or less per instrument, then you can sell a guitar at a decent price and survive comfortable enough as a small time builder. Keeping labor around $1000 and simply adding the total wood and hardware/pickup cost. Obviously...
Where did you guys hear that maple and mahogany don't like each other? That combo is as classic as peanut butter and jelly lol. I personally like black limba and walnut with maple myself.
I think it could be worth it if OP has the money to give it a try. Never know, dude could have learned how to build a proper guitar by now and he gets a steal. If any of you guys have tried building at home, you know what a year or two of practice can do for your building skills.
None of that...
