Not only was he the quintessential drummer, but a one of my favorite lyricist as well.

I was not expecting this at all. Neil is probably the biggest influence on me as a drummer and Rush songs are the absolute best to drum along to. I knew this was gonna come at some point but I had no idea it would be this soon. There's a lot of drumming for me to do now in honor of Neil. Rest in peace.
Same here. Neil has been my #1 drummer, and Rush my favorite band, for over 35 years! Holy shit!

Wow. This one hits hard. Neil was an absolute paragon (no pun intended) in his field.
I remember when I was just starting to play drums, trying my best to keep up with him and butchering song after song. The first time I made it cleanly through The Trees was probably the first time I felt like I could call myself an actual drummer. Definitely one of the best of all time.
He will be sorely missed for years to come.
