yeah, I was coming to say the same.

Admittedly, the value of the dollar depreciatng by maybe 45% in 23 years isn't great... but this has also been a period of abnormaly high inflation, and one the Fed has only partially gotten on top of, and has come after both a period of unprecetended monetary stimulus, followed by several massive supply shocks. The long term trend would be more like 40% devaluation over that time, or $1 in 2000 being about $1.57 today
GBP is 1.77 over the same period, which is a bit surprising considering Brexit. But I guess we lost a lot of value against USD in that time.

Inflation and exchange rates are related to a degree (especially in net importer countries - as your currency weakens, the cost of imports rises in local terms, and your money goes less far than it used to), but yeah, go back to 2014 and you were around $1.70 to buy 1 pound, and in September of 2022 we damned near hit unity. Back off to about $1.2 to "buy" a pound now, but yeah, you got hammered; the pound fell from $1.5 to $1.3 basically overnight on Brexit.

Nah nothing attractive out there. I don’t even bother looking atm. Sure I’ve missed some deals, but I’m not gonna get bent out of shape about it.

Also, how many of you regularly buy and sell guitars? I'm curious.

I haven't bought a used guitar in... seven or eight years, I think? I've only bought one new guitar in that time too, and I don't think I've sold anything in more than 10. Is this something where for most of you it's rare for a year to go buy where you haven't bought or sold something?

Since Jan '20 I have purchased 23 guitars and sold a bit more than that, 10 of which were purchased last year. There's a definite shift between the height of the pandemic and today in terms of buying power and selling speed.

I have so much respect for Synergy for holding out this long. Still same prices Since they started I think.

So they've just been pricre gouging from day 1?

I used to buy multiple guitars, amps, and pedals every year. Sell something I bought to fund something new. Most of the time I was +/- $100 when selling.

The new tax rules, fees/shipping cost increases, and general insane prices have killed that. I didn't buy a guitar last year, but I did get a Mark IV and a Rev G DR. They were only a couple hundred more than the old prices though. I did not pay $2K a piece.

i bought a reverend sensei ra a couple of days ago.

was tracking them for a while and the used ones were selling so even though i paid more than i wanted i still got good enough of a discount to buy used vs new.

I mean for me its not taxes or transaction costs or anything, it's just that over the years I've gotten better and better about figuring out what exactly I like, and just buying that. My "newest" guitar was a Suhr I ordered in 2018, and while I suppose at some point I want to grab a decent Tele, I'm looking for a long term keeper, and not looking THAT hard.

Idunno. I think there's something to be said for owning a guitar long enough that it starts to feel like part of you. I don't have patience to flip guitars chasing the latest or greatest thing.

Yeah I just get disappointed when buying gear anyway, realizing I prefer the things I already had.

That's the ultimate goal, but you don't know what fits you best without trying stuff. It's not really about the latest and greatest. I mean I went from a Jackson Custom Select, to a Mayones Duvell Elite, to a Jackson Mick Thomson import when I was looking for a "metal only" guitar

For me though, that wouldn't have happened if I started in the past 2 years. I wouldn't have been willing to put out the money to try the Custom or the Mayo given all the circumstances I mentioned.

I’ve gotten pickier than I already was, but typically 1-2 decent purchases/sales annually. I’ve gone through a Helix, Kemper, and FM3 since like 2018 on the modeling hardware alone.

I don’t enjoy paying MSRP though, as nothing is ever “perfect” enough to warrant that. Hence me not buying much else since.

I have yet to play anything I like more than my Mark V. I'm not even tempted by the VII or 2C, honestly. I've just tried a LOT of stuff over my life, and dialed in my rig/signal chain pretty well for what I'm after.

Dude, how are you liking yours? I fell in love with mine the first time I played it. I got the dark purple one.

It seems high to me. Maybe my mind is locked in at 10 yrs ago prices. I see prices on things up 20-50%. Most my stuff has appreciated in value, some have doubled (I got my Tremoverb for under $700 which was a good deal but they start like $1500 now). Even my Agile guitar goes for more used now than when I got it new at full price (which was like $300). I find things looking high on Reverb, Ebay, GC Used.

it actually just came today and luckily we have rehearsal tonight so I'm pretty excited. I'll let you know tomorrow lol. I played one a few years ago at a guitar shop and remember loving it though.

You know we need a NGD with pics, right? I know porn isn't allowed on this site, but they're just going to have to make an exception this once.

I knew I loved les pauls (gestures at 10+yo tattoo) and had fun trying out other things that piqued my curiosity. My buy and sell spree (and its been a spree and im so glad i dont care about anything available) was fun, mostly a net gain and now I just want to actually use most of it on a regular basis.

I think i have bought 3 flip purchases since 2020.

This. This a thousand times.

I haven't bought a guitar since 2019. To be honest I kinda got two, but I knew beforehand they weren't going to stay and they were gone in less than two months. I have some "bucket list" gear, so I have saved searches on usual websites. If they pop up, I'll know. Other than that, there's nothing that interests me.

I had my stage of collecting rare rack preamps, but after realizing they rarely got any playtime I sold them all except two. Same with pedals, amps... Since I'm in two gigging bands I need several rigs/backups so I spend the most in functional gear. Two amps and a backup. If one gets in, other gets out. I just don't have the time to drive from one place to another to play this or that amp.

So yeah, I try to buy shit I will keep. I'm super happy with my recent Marshall JVM205C adquisition and it's not going anywhere.
