Sweet Leaf by Black Sabbath
Fear Inoculum by Tool
Blackened by Metallica

There are so many, but Sweet Leaf started my journey in metal ... so it has to be my number one.

As much as I love this album despite it's flaws, this opening goes hard

Since it seems like people are doing more than just their #1 overall, here's a short list of openers that have really hit home; I was absolutely insufferable as a teen metalhead, and then Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind broke me into the indie/alternative scene, and some of these were from when I first took that plunge.

The metal/rock ones are far more obvious:

Amon Amarth - Twilight of the Thunder God
Arch Enemy - The Immortal
Nevermore - Born

Etc, etc

Lots of great album openers mentioned in this thread, so I'm gonna go with one that wasn't mentioned (matter of fact, I only saw one mention of the band in the thread...blasphemy!)

For me it's the intro to Lamb of God's Wrath. The intro "The Passing" is kind of okay, but the transition to "in your words" is just kicking some serious ass.

Also the intro to the album Opus by Nospun. Entirely different to LoG, but that dry vocals are really awesome. Even though I find the lyrics of the entire album lacking something I cannot really name...

I know this will be in the minority but ima go with Muramasa off Periphery 2. After the first album, this song really gives off the vibe "oh shit these boys just got serious"

couldn't agree more re: Samsara leading into Unrest. Parkway made it very clear they meant heavy business on Deep Blue with those beatdowns to start
