... as well as to their preferring the EQ profile imposed by vinyl ... I guess that's different from saying only vinyl can deliver that sound ...
I think that's key. I've encountered many a CD that was mastered poorly: overly compressed, harshly filtered, etc. Add to that that many of the original CD's were just digitized versions of other masters, some even left the Dolby noise reduction frequency boosts for cassettes in place.

I think one needs to listen to a Classical CD that's been mastered well to realize what CD's could be. I remember the first three CD's I heard that made me go "wow", this will make a difference in the long run: Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Animals and Wish You Were Here. In the other direction, the best example of a poorly mastered CD I have is Ani DiFranco's Dilate; I don't know what they did, but it sounds like it only has about 40dB of dynamic range.

We used to have "The Late Late Rock Show" here on our local rock station. I heard really good bands like saosin (with Anthony Green), Coheed, and a bunch of other good bands. That and headbangers ball before they stopped running for 2 hours.

 yes! it really was a crap-shoot back then.

but on the plus side i did stumble across exodus, testement, s.o.d., flotsam & jetsam :yesway:

DOOMSDAY FOR THE DECEIVER!!!!!

What an awful cover that record had!
But the dudes on the back had torn up jeans and shit like me and my lowlife droogies. So....

I used to trade tapes and pick up the fanzines at the reject record store- remember the cut-out bins?
Oh the excitement! Oh the anticipation!
Oh the newness of it all!

To be a teenage metalhead in the 80's!
This thread is awesome!

I love you guys..

I used to buy stuff with what I thought to be "metal" artworks. 9 times out of 10 I was highly disappointed and ended up broke...

There was a used cd store near my house that I always hit up. I liked buying movie sound tracks because they had a bunch of bands. I got introduced to rammstein from mortal kombat 2 :p Besides that it was stuff my guitar teachers introduced to me

Mostly listening to cds in a record store, going by cover art. I remember buying suicidal tendencies and a Biohazard cd just because I liked the graphics.

does anyone remember the show friday night videos?

As a kid, my dad refused to get cable. He thought it was all dirty porn and smut. Pretty lame. So Friday night videos was the closest thing I had to MTV. However, looking back BOY did that show suck.

There was another one too, I think it was called "InConcert TV" or something. All I remember is staying up late when I was a kid to watch an episode where they spent an hour going back and forth between a Judas Priest concert and an Alice Cooper concert. In fact, I think that was my first exposure to songs like "Elected" and "Hell Bent for Leather"

Anyone remember before Headbanger's Ball? I remember when it all started in the 80's with the back to back "Hard 60" and "Yo MTV Raps!" in the afternoon after school. Hard 60 was an all metal/heavy rock format. It lasted about a years, I think, then resurfaced as the Headbangers Ball. I think both were hosted by Adam Curry. Adam Curry is a MUCH hotter chick than the host of Uranium.

Mostly word of mouth. Magazines somewhat. Go to cd store and randomly buy a cd with the coolest logo/cover art and hope its not shit. I will say that when this worked out, it was absolutely glorious that you teens today can't understand. I bought an Opeth cd on a whim, cuz I liked the 'O' in their name. Man than shit blew me away.
I'm 17 and find stuff at the library including books. Zu is probly the best I found.

Haha, yea, was gonna say the exact same thing, I got Eminem's "Marshal Mathers LP" and Linkin Park's "Hybrid Theory" cause I liked their songs on MTV(didn't get into metal(no, Linkin Park wasn't metal) until I was like 14-15(which was around 2005-2006 I think)).
Got a few songs from the radio and also parents were an influence(I really hate to admit this, but they got me into stuff like Westlife, Backstreet Boys, 5ive and that shit, I smashed those CDs a couple of years ago. 't was fun...).
EDIT: My dad did get me into Michael Jackson though, and that's cool
EDIT 2: Oh, I also loved to record on tapes from the radio when I was younger, I so listened to the tapes I made a lot, most songs I recorded were just random, but I listened to those tapes over and over again.
I guess just thought it was kind of amazing to just push the record button and then whatever I was hearing on the radio was on the tape. Oh, the good ol' days...
My mom get me into Linkin Park, System of a Down, Disturbed, Korn, and Motley Crue. I got into Extreme stuff on my own, but with out my mom I don't think I would like Extreme metal.

Sadly... ? I didn't. My family had a computer and internet connection since I was like, 5-6 years old. And with a premature stroke, I don't remember much before that, or even much after.

I'm one of the lucky ones.

Mostly just picking up CDs my friends recommended or grabbing ones that looked cool in store. I remember picking up Master of Puppets because a record store employee wrote "MoP: possibly the best metal album of all time!" and I really wanted to hear metal at that age. Of course, this was 1999-2000, and we had dial-up, but there was no way I could download a whole album or bring it with me anywhere.
