I thought you were saying this as a joke. Nope. He totally did post a picture of him with a phallically held pink guitar. Nothing says "I don't get it" like a pic that's meant to say "I get it" from a person who does not. At all.

Just being facetious but I could kind of imagine him in a photo holding a blue and pink guitar and saying, "Whichever of the two genders you love, ViK Guitars supports you! - VK"

Jeez, that's even creepier than the actual picture. :ugh:

Look, don't be too hard on the guy, if it was possible to use the internet for anything other than how to effectively use social media to scam people, would Trump be president?

I honestly don’t get how people can scam a small community, go dark for a while, then show back up to said community, and expect trust. Psychopathy, maybe? I mean, BRJ showed up at NAMM a couple of years ago, and was rumored to be going to work with a company (although, I forget which). Darren is relaunching Decibel, and keeping the name and logo, after that fiasco. And Vik is still trying to get new customers, and is apparently active online, yet hasn’t made right on old orders. Putting aside the ethics and humanity of it all, where did these guys get their (lack of) business acuman? It just seems like a dumb ass way to try to get customers.

^It's dumbfounding, I agree. Though it seems like, with a wide-enough audience, those issues seem to get covered-up: there will be a faction that isn't aware of the issues or another that can be convinced that the that those wronged were lying or, ugh, "haters". People lose all sense when they see a pretty guitar- they want it and will see what they want to see if it gives them a chance of having it.

To be entirely honest, that isn't too hard to pull off when the market is sufficiently large - if Legator can keep garnering fans and sales with horrendous QC issues and some abolutely scary depictions of customers trying to get them sorted / refunded, something as niche as SSO's group runs can be completely unknown to the vast customer base out there unless it starts doing the rounds as vigorously as the whole homophobic debacle did, and even so...

The Western world is pretty short on things to believe in, so now instead of religions, kings, or heroes people believe in "influencers", in this case a guitar manufacturer. I speak from experience when I say that it's super easy to let hype overwhelm common sense. I gave a luthier $600 to build a guitar even after he quintupled his quoted lead time to do a refin for me a year earlier. It took me two years to fully realize that he would never deliver it to me and that I'd have to recover my money, and during that time I even posted on here and UG defending him.... stupid, stupid, stupid. Hell, I still kind of want a Kiesel even though there's a fair chance something won't be right with it when I get it. I might order one someday if I ever drum up enough discipline and maturity to objectively evaluate it when it comes to me and have the chutzpah to call AmEx if they try to shaft me, but until such a time I won't take the chance. I know myself too well.

TL;DR we are a world of Instagram/FOMO-addicted tools.

Just read most of this thread... did anybody ever get their guitars?

If not, why hasn't this guy had his ass kicked yet?

To my knowledge no one from this run or the other 8 string run received their guitars. And 2 of the 5 from the saviour run didn't get theirs either

Hang on... there was a group of people who got ripped by this guy, then ANOTHER group threw down money? And somewhere in there at least another two got ripped off?

Perhaps I'm naiive, having only ever bought off-the-shelf production guitars, but how in the hell does something like this happen?

There was a run started in 2011-2012 which 3 of the 5 we're delivered. In 2013? He took on two 8 string runs at the same time, one standard and one multiacale. All of this was getting going before the shit hit the fan with him. At the time, there wasn't any indication this was going to happen.

There's an expected delay of 2-3 years while he's supposed to be building the guitars. Plenty of time for something like this to happen, and orders that would ultimately go unfulfilled to build up.

Gotcha, thanks for the clarification.

2-3 years... in that time, I'd decide what I want, change my mind several times, quit playing electric guitar altogether and go to acoustic, circle back to electric and probably be back into the original idea of the order.

Clearly I'm better served shopping for production instruments :)

Not a bad idea. I've spent way more money than I'd ever imagined because of 2-5 year lead times and pretty small deposits to get things rolling. I'm not buying guitars for me, I'm buying guitars for me in 2024 -- that guy will be rich, surely.

At the time of these runs Vik was churning out builds and keeping his build threads on his forum regularly updated, it was a safe option compared to many other guys at the time. It was around the following Musikmesse that he disappeared for about a year plus and just built what he wanted to after he came back. He could easily finish them now that he's set up in Frank Falbo's workshop with so much machinery and help.

People are still ordering?

The ERG community doesn't seem big enough to be able to get away with ripping people off.
