Richie is still ....ing sick. Every time I've heard anything of his, I've been stupid impressed. I've waited a long ....ing time to have more NZ metal bands with this quality of playing and production doing shit I like. The entire scene has been getting better and better for the past five years...
At best the Metalzone is good as a filter. You can get a really ugly sound for intros and minor breaks where you want it to sound like tone pissed through a grinder. Otherwise, it's very limited in actual applications.
Lies! I make my guitars do this all the time :D
Adoption is a very good thing though. A lot of those animals are deserving far better than they have, and the reward for looking after them can be incredible.
Let's face it, guitarists are kinda arrogant as a breed. We aren't as content to sit in the background and hold stuff together to the degree that most bassists and drummers are. It's hard to fit four egos (generalising here) in to one frequency range :D
There are big advantages to three...
You won't get a decent 7 with solid trem bridge for cheap alas. RG7321s are a good pick though. The new 7421s are affordable as well, can get them for NZ$650 over here in Kiwiland. Could look at some of the LTD 7s, Schecter 7s, etc. Aim for something that's got a proven track record and not one...
Basswood as mentioned. Could look at something chambered or semi-hollow. Parker's are renowned for having some light models. Lots of options really, just gotta avoid the heavy woods and large constructions.
Yeah, 74 or an 80 is fine. As you say, just use an 8 set with a heavy bottom and it will run good. I think I have a 72 for drop G when I do so, and it's pretty much spot on what I want. An extra semi-tone wouldn't warrant more than a little heavier gauge.
Who gives a damn if he shreds? Stop assigning more strings to shredding, it's narrow minded as hell. He does a lot of chord work that has only expanded over the years as the Deftones sound has become more complex. He doesn't have to use all 8 strings every song to justify the need for eight...
I guess go to a low E. It seems like you don't actually want to go to 7s though, not with that tuning and especially since you don't really have a firm idea on what you want to do with it. Not to discourage, but it's usually better to have an idea as to what you wish to do with it first.
Vai. I can respect his technical prowess and chops, but I personally have never heard anything from him that I can personally connect with as a piece, song, or otherwise. He may as well be a super-fast, well-programmed synth to me - well organised, extensively proficient, but just lacking in...
My issue is that you are blaming the desire to be happy rather than the methodology. I think everybody should strive to be happy, but they should also strive to be happy in a meaningful manner.
